MEET THE MONA

Howler monkey is the symbol of the competition; name chosen by popular vote

The mascot of the São Paulo 2017 Youth Parapan American Games could not have more to do with the venue where the event will take place. Mona is a howler monkey, a species always present in conservation areas of the Atlantic Forest. The Brazilian Paralympic Training Centre – where the competition will take place – is situated adjacent to one of the main areas of forest preservation in the city of São Paulo. The name Mona was chosen by popular vote, held on the Brazilian Paralympic Committee’s Facebook page (the other options were Mina and Sampa). Mona means “monkey” in Spanish, a language widely spoken on the continent.
