Age at the Youth Parapan Am Games: 14-17 years; 18-19 years

Paralympic athletics are practiced by athletes with physical, visual or intellectual disabilities. It includes track events, as well as jumps and throws, for both men and women. Competitors are arranged into groups in accordance with their level of disability, which is determined by their functional classification. Athletes who compete in track events (sprints, middle-distance, long distance and marathons) and the long jump are identified by the letter T in their classification. Athletes who take part in field events (throws and high jump) are denoted by the letter F.

 

 

For visually impaired athletes, the rules for using sighted guides vary in accordance with their functional classification. In the 5000 m event, athletes classed T11 and T12 can be assisted by up to two sighted guides throughout the race (the substitution is made during the event). In regards to the podium, the sighted guide that finishes the race will receive a medal while the other will not.
