Age at the Youth Parapan Am Games: 15-20 years

In Paralympic powerlifting, the competitors consist of men and women with disabilities of the lower extremities (amputees and paraplegics) or cerebral palsy. The athletes perform a movement known as a bench press, which involves pressing a weight upwards from a supine position. Each competitor is allowed three attempts and the heaviest weight lifted is counted as the final result.

During the event, three judges oversee the weightlifting attempts. A white flag means the movement was valid, while a red flag signifies an invalid attempt. The athlete requires at least two white flags for the weight lifted to be considered valid. Athletes compete in different weight classes, similar to their Olympic counterparts. The Rio 2016 Paralympic Games included twenty categories, ten for men and ten for women.
